The O. Nordic Juniors is an after school ski program for kids that ranges from "learn to ski" on up to full racing in the inter-mountain region.  The program is best suited for ages 8-18 and has been operating since 1997, under the direction of Paul Stromberg.  The idea is to ski after school and be home for dinner.

The aim of our organizers, coaches, and assistants is to provide an atmosphere that encourages and challenges the kids to develop skiing skills and the ability to have fun on skies.  "Listening, Tyring, and Doing" is a key element reinforced by the coaches to help the kids along the path toward enjoyment.  Skiers of all ages and abilities are welcome, but all participants need to be able to enjoy outdoor winter weather, and physical activities, without complaint.   The O. Nordic program is separated into the "Fins" or age U-12, "Devo" - the Development Team, and "Comp" - Competition Teams.  This separation is based on the abilities and desires of the skier together with their parents.

During the ski season, coaches help junior athletes by leading the weekday training, and by providing race support, or club events on Saturdays and weekends.  After the ski season, soccer and mountain bike riding are encouraged to help maintain fitness and provide some means of cross-training.

  • Ogden Nordic Fins
  • The "Fins" program is designed for junior skiers age 7 to 12 years old.  This program runs from the first week of Jan and ends in the first part of March.  Normally there are 2-3 Saturdays events for the kids in North-fork Park depending on group interest and schedules.  This program meets 2 days per week after school. (Normally T / F).  The time is dependant on coaches and transportation of the kids, but is normally at 3:45pm - 5:30 pm.
    • Ogden Nordic Development Team
    • The Development Program is oriented toward skiers with intermediate skiing skills who are interested in developing better ski technique (in both classic and skate skiing), working harder for overall fitness, and for those may want to try, or are already, racing in the local Wasatch Citizen Series (WCS).  Participation in the WCS is easy, fun, and encouraged!

This program meets 2-3 times per week (normally T / Th / F )...depending on the coaches, and the participant's, schedules.  Wednesdays are also an option if parents prefer.  Devo skiers are encouraged to ski with, and help, the "fins" on Friday evenings.  Skiing and training begins in December and runs through March.  The time target is 3:45 pm to 5:30 pm.

    • Ogden Nordic Competition Team

The Comp Program is oriented toward skiers with intermediate to advanced skiing skills, and those who are serious about their skills, technique, and overall fitness.  Coaches will focus each session on fitness, and specific technique applicable to racing.  Skill training will be individualized to the skier so that that weaknesses are challenged and strengths maintained.  Overall fitness will be developed though a mixture of intervals, hills, sprints, and long slow distance.

Comp skiers normally enter several WCS and Inter-mountain series races each season.  Since our division is centered in Utah it is relatively easy to attend several great races each season.  Racing in West Yellowstone, Mt., Sun Valley, Id., and Soldier Hollow, UT. is among the best in the country!

The Comp program meets 3-4 times per week (normally T/ W / Th / Fr)...depending on the coaches, and the participant's, schedules.  Skiing and training begins in December and runs through March.  The time target is 3:45 pm to 5:30 pm

    Fees & Expenses

Fees are based on participation level and age.  The Cost for the "Fins" program is $35 per season.  The cost for the "Devo" program is $65 per season.  The cost for "Comp" is $125 per season.

Equipment:  The club has a limited amount of gear please inquire early!

Ogden Nordic is a non-profit organization funded exclusively by skiers and corporate donations.  Participation fees cover program expenses such as: coaches, wax, supplies, and treats.

Race fees are partially funded by the club.  Transportation to and from events and races are shared amongst the participants.

All of the parents and coaches of Ogden Nordic understand the financial demands of children and athletic programs.  For more information on the cost involved in starting your skier and ways to save money and still participate, please call our head coach, or any member of Ogden Nordic. We're here to help in any way we can and would much rather you try it!

    The Family's Role

To be a successful Nordic Skier requires the participation and support of the family. It is not necessary for the parent to be a good skier to help out the Junior Team.  Parents can help by forming carpool groups, assisting coaches out on the trails, or by helping to send communications.  Parents can also help by providing warm beverages and treats after training.

If your family is involved with the "Devo", or "Comp" team, then it is likely that your help will be needed for the events and races.  Pre-race organization is always helpful.  These duties relate to pre-registration a week or two early and the organization of car pools and pick up points.  Race day help is also key to a good experience for everyone.  Getting to the race early is a big help.  These duties include picking up the race bibs, getting the start order and time, and selecting a Team Spot near the start / finish line for the skiers gear.  Other duties of race day are: getting the numbers on getting kids to the start line in plenty of time.  We expect all parents to assist at one or more event during the session.
